How to clean ceiling mould at home

How to clean mould at home?


The most common problem as a professional mould removalist in Sydney we encounter is a client attempted to clean the mould themselves then it spread even further. So we have questions like how do you clean mould at home with what is available at the supermarket?


Mould cleaning safety

Safety is first when it comes to microbial or mould remediation or mould cleaning or mould removal. The following is a minimum PPE requirements DIY mould removal at home


  1. Gloves and goggles

  2. Half face P3 mask

  3. Overall

  4. Hire a air scrubber from Kennards hire

  5. Buy a hepa vacuum filter and hepa dust bag for your vacuum , most vacuum cleaners have an option to change the internal filter to a hepa filter

Best way clean mould on ceilings

The first step is preparing the area by setup containment. Buy some plastic sheeting and black out the mould infected area, this will ensure you do not cross contaminate the mould spores to other areas.


Second steps is make sure you have all you safety gear fitted correctly


Third step is ensure your air scrubbers and vacuum is working correctly. Remember when removing mould on ceiling or walls, ensure the air scrubber is exhaust outside the working area. This will capture all the aerosol spores within the working area.


Fourth step is the fun part. CLEANING MOULD !

A. Vacuum all hard surface including mould infested surfaces in your working area with the hepa vacuum

B. Damp wipe all surfaces within the working area. You can just use house cleaning products like detergent

C. Vacuum the surfaces again. This is called a sandwich technique. VAC, WIPE, VAC

D. check all surfaces again to ensure you did not missed any part of the ceilings or walls.

E. Let the air scrubber to run for atlesst 6 hours before decommissioning


Note: any porous materials such as dry walls or timber that shows signs of water damage and are rotten. Always remove and discarded.
